Killian Wawoe

Money and Happiness

We all dream of that moment when money finally sets us free. When life feels spacious, secure, and full of possibility.

But is money really the gateway to happiness?
And if it isn’t, why does it drive so much of what we do?

In this sharp and thought provoking lecture, Kilian Wawoe dismantles our assumptions about money and motivation. What actually moves people? Which incentives truly work, and which quietly backfire? Why do some rewards feel fair while others trigger resistance or even outrage? And how do cultural norms shape what we consider acceptable? Expect insights from behavioral science, real world cases and uncomfortable truths about what truly makes us tick.

With humor, vivid storytelling and clarity, Kilian takes you into the psychology of money and happiness. You may leave questioning more than just your salary.

Kilian Wawoe is an organisational psychologist and scientist, formerly Vice President for West and Southern Europe at ABN AMRO. In 2010, he left the bank over its bonus culture and earned his PhD on reward systems in the financial sector. He is Professor of HR Management, published books on performance management and reward systems, regular contributor to Follow the Money, and received an honorary doctorate in 2025.
